Casa Cometa

La Maremma è una terra amara venuta dal mare. Here lies Casa Cometa, an elegant farmhouse surrounded by pine and oak trees, located just inland from the coast between Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare. In 2025, Margherita and Chiara revived the property, first converted in the 1950s from a rural working barn into a charming rural house. Rich in history, Casa Cometa tells the story of a family deeply rooted in Maremma’s agricultural and cultural heritage.

Today, it is shaped by two cousins in their 30s returning to their homeland with a shared background in design and art. The house preserves its eclectic charm, seamlessly blending historical character with contemporary comforts. A place to welcome friends and guests, drink wine, cook, experiment, connect with people, or pause. Casa Cometa is part of a larger farm known for its commitment to circular agriculture and sustainable livestock farming.

Food & Wine

Breakfast is served either in the garden around the large convivial al fresco table or indoors, in the charming dining room. We work with local producers and seasonal ingredients. The Bar offers a selection of small plates and wines for a refreshing daytime pause, and a private chef is available upon request to prepare lunch or dinner (subject to availability and quotation). Guests can also book a wine tasting experience of Il Pingro wines paired with freshly prepared bites. Read more about our food experiences to complement your staying.

Stay

Restored in the 1950s and dusted-off in 2025, Casa Cometa offers accommodation spread over two levels. All rooms are decorated in an eclectic style that blends Casa Cometa’s rich history with 21st-century comforts. Antique wooden furnishings are paired with modern design elements, while drapes, curtains, and textiles add warmth and intimacy. All rooms retain their original and worn by time Tuscan terracotta floors.

The ground floor: Once dedicated to the farm’s agricultural life, the ground floor of Casa Cometa originally housed animal stables, feed rooms, and storage areas for wine and olive oil. In the 1950s, these generous spaces were elegantly transformed, preserving the vaulted wooden ceilings and the charm of a rural property. The spacious living room centers around a large fireplace, with a seating area inviting guests to pause, read, or connect. Tall porte-fenêtres flood the room with natural light and open onto the surrounding garden. A floor-to-ceiling library filled with books adds further character to the space – complete with a bust statue of Ponticelli, an important figure in the history of the house and the Maremma region. Casa Cometa is rich in history: come read our books, or let us share the stories.
The living room opens into the convivial dining room, featuring antique wooden storage cabinets and a large central table. An oil painting by a family member and a historic chandelier complete the space, which overlooks the garden. Beyond the dining room, a corridor leads to the semi-professionally equipped kitchen, where you or our chef can prepare meals. The kitchen features a marble-topped central island, a professional five-burner gas stove, stainless steel surfaces for preparation, and a full range of modern appliances. At the far end, you’ll find a storage room, laundry area, and two small bathrooms.

In the hallway, an ancient well and an antique Roma-style sofa give historic charm to the space. All but one bedroom are accessed from the ground floor:

Chitra: This spacious master bedroom features a modern king-size aluminum bed, a working fireplace, and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and toilet. View room details.

The first floor: A stone stairway leads up from the hallway to the first floor. Original antique terracotta floor tiles blend beautifully with modern furniture and wooden antiques. Here is the second master bedroom:

Vega: Accessible through its own small hallway connecting the bedroom and its private bathroom, Vega offers a sense of privacy and separation from the rest of the house. The bedroom features a king-size bed with a green velvet headboard and ancient wooden cabinets, complemented by modern design elements. The adjacent bathroom is decorated with classic 1950s-style tiles and includes a distinctive bathtub. View room details.

The second floor: On the opposite side, the stone stairway leads up to the second-floor corridor, bathed in natural light and featuring impressively high vaulted wooden ceilings. This corridor opens onto three bedrooms that complete the accommodation:

Meissa: A big double bedroom with a king-size brass bed that can be separated into two single beds as needed. The room features a wooden Liberty-style closet and chest of drawers. View room details.

Cassiopea: A spacious bedroom featuring a king-size bed with a 1950s bamboo bed frame, and a built-in closet adorned with carefully reclaimed and restored original English wallpaper. View room details.

Ada: This generous bedroom features a king-size bed, a large antique closet with mirrored doors, and a wooden desk.

Please note that these three bedrooms share a bathroom with a shower built into a bathtub and toilet, making this floor best suited for a family with children or a group traveling together. Completing the second floor is a room used for storage.

Outside: Across the grounds of Casa Cometa, countless quiet corners invite guests to relax, read, or gather. A large outdoor table becomes the heart of al fresco living – hosting long lunches, wine tastings, and dinners under the stars. Several pieces of outdoor furniture make lingering outdoors even more comfortable, though simply lying on the grass beneath the filtered light of the pine trees remains a favourite way to pause. Casa Cometa sits at the heart of a vast agricultural estate that stretches out as far as the eye can see. It is nestled within the Pineta, one of Maremma’s most iconic landscapes – a coastal pine forest originally planted on sandy soils to supplement the farm's income. Despite their aridity, these lands also served as ideal pastures for livestock. Today, the Pineta forms a shaded, fragrant corridor along the coast, home to deer, foxes, wild boars, and birds. Walking or biking from the Casa into the Pineta is a sensory journey: the scent of resin and wild herbs, sunlight softly filtered through tall trunks, until the sound of waves welcomes you to the sea.
